The BA in Business and Law with Foundation Year is an interdisciplinary course that brings together the strengths of business and legal education to reflect the realities of the modern professional landscape.
Today's employers value graduates who not only understand the commercial world but also possess the legal knowledge to navigate complex regulatory environments. In addition, lawyers also need to understand the strategic management and priorities of their clients and their business. This course is designed to equip you with both - developing critical skills in strategic decision-making, contract negotiation, governance, and risk management. Whether you are interested in entrepreneurship, corporate consultancy, compliance and regulation, or management within a legal environment, this course offers a flexible and intellectually engaging route into a wide range of careers.
Within the course we integrate real-world case studies, business strategy and legal practice and procedures which means you will graduate with practical insight and academic knowledge.
In the first year of this course you will be working towards passing a foundation year (year 0), which will enable automatic progression onto year one our BA Business and Law.
Our integrated Business Foundation Year degrees are aimed at students who wish to study a business-related subject but don't have the traditional entry requirements.
The course is run on the University of Leicester campus like any other, and you will studying alongside other students who applied for, and slightly missed out on, a place on a course similar to yours.
You will be taught by our expert staff from across all areas of the School of Business. The course strongly emphasises the development of essential professional and personal skills, which are necessary throughout your studies and beyond.
During your foundation year you will join our student community and be able to enjoy all aspects of the University of Leicester and School of Business student experience. You will be able to join the Students' Union, use our academic and leisure facilities, live in our accommodation and access all our support services. You will have a dedicated personal tutor to support you through your foundation year.

- A/AS-levels: BCC. We may consider points equivalent from your best three A-levels.
- GCSE: Mathematics and English Language at grade 4/C
- BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM
- International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 26 points overall with a minimum, to include appropriate Maths and English content if not held at GCSE.
- Access to HE: Pass diploma with 24 distinctions in a business-related subject.
English Language Requirements
IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

- Foundation Year: £5,760
The fee listed above applies to the Foundation Year only. Tuition fees for subsequent years of the degree will be charged at the standard undergraduate rate set by the UK Government. For the 2027/28 academic year, the Home UK tuition fee is expected to be £10,050. Further increases are anticipated to be implemented automatically through government legislation, therefore it is likely that your tuition fees will rise for each subsequent year of your studies.

- Foundation Year: £17,750
The fee listed above applies to the Foundation Year only. Tuition fees for subsequent years of the degree will be charged at the standard undergraduate rate for the course, based on the year the student first started their foundation year. Therefore, students who begin their foundation year in 2026/27 and progress to their undergraduate degree in 2027/28 will pay £20,200 per year for the remainder of their course.
If you are resident outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, you will need to pay a deposit to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

You'll also benefit from expert support through our dedicated School of Business and Leicester Law School Careers and Employability Teams, who can help you plan your future, build your experience and connect with employers.
Routes to becoming a solicitor or barrister
You may choose to pursue further legal education upon completion of this course to progress to a professional qualification as a solicitor or barrister. Our Careers and Employability Service can provide information regarding the various ways to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Exams (stages 1 and 2).
It is important to note that further study is required by the Bar Standards Board before progression to the Bar course that is a requirement to qualify as a barrister in England and Wales, as the content of this course does not include sufficient coverage of the seven Foundations of Legal Knowledge to permit direct entry to a Bar course. Again, the Careers and Employability Service can advise you of the further study required to satisfy the Bar Standards Boards requirements for the academic stage of Bar training.

On a ULSB course you have the option of spending your third year gaining work experience on an industry placement or studying abroad at one of our partner institutions. Alternatively you can continue studying and complete your degree in three years.
Year in Industry
A Year in Industry is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience of a working environment within the sector of your choice. It is normally a paid position, more than offsetting the additional cost of your extra year and can take place either in the UK or overseas.
If you decide to undertake a Year in Industry you will responsible for securing your own placement, with support from the School and University Careers and Employability Service. Please note that deciding to search for a Year in Industry does not guarantee you a placement.
During your Year in Industry you will be support by the School of Business Careers Team. This will include communication with you and your manager and a visit to your place of work, which may be face to face or virtual (depending on your location). You will also undertake written work to capture the learning from your experience, which will include reflection on your personal and professional development. This work will be assessed to allow you to gain recognition for your Year in Industry.
Your Year in Industry effectively begins in Year One when you will be introduced to various opportunities to develop your skills, your understanding and experience. In Year Two you will be given access to bespoke extra-curricular support to aid you in searching for suitable placement opportunities, and undertaking the recruitment and selection process.
A Year in Industry is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the types of professions you can choose after you graduate, and can also point you towards postgraduate studies that may help you on the path to your chosen career.

We'll make sure you have everything you need for your career: not just by awarding you a high quality degree, but also by helping you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to make your mark in the world as a Citizen of Change. One way to do this is by opting to take a Year Abroad between your second and final year.
Studying abroad is not just for people who are interested in travelling and meeting new people. It is about acquiring life skills that are becoming increasingly significant for a wide range of jobs in our modern globalised society. Teaching and learning
A variety of teaching methods are used with the aim of creating a stimulating environment in which you are encouraged to develop your learning skills and to actively engage and participate in your learning process. Lectures will provide you with the framework and foundational knowledge for each module, whilst seminars, held in smaller groups, provide you with the opportunity to discuss key ideas with your tutors and classmates.
Assessment methods are varied to allow you to develop a range of academic and transferable skills throughout your course and these include individual essays, examinations, presentations and group activities.
Independent learning
When not attending lectures, seminars or other timetabled sessions you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for exams. To help with your independent learning, you can access the Library and our social study spaces in halls of residence.
Academic support
Our AccessAbility Centre offers support and practical help for students with dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties, including physical, mental health or mobility difficulties, deafness, or visual impairment.
Teaching staff
You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. PhD research students who have undertaken teacher training may also contribute to the teaching of seminars under the supervision of the module leader. Our teaching is informed by the research we do.
