At the University of Leicester, we know that parents, carers and family members have a key role in providing support for students applying to, and studying at, university. We recognise that when a member of your family goes to university, you want to know that there will be support and advice available, should they need it.

Come and see the University for yourself

You are very welcome to come along to one of our Open Days where you will be able to look around the campus and ask questions of staff and current students. Booking your place in advance is recommended.

If your family member has already received an offer of a place from Leicester, they will be invited to a UCAS Visit Day, and you can come along too. These events give more detailed information than the standard Open Days, including a presentation about finance and student support which is aimed specifically at parents and carers.

Application process

Applying to university can be a daunting experience for students – and for their parents and carers too. Even if you were once a student yourself, the process may have changed in the intervening years. At the University of Leicester, we do all we can to make the application process painless and friendly, providing you with guidance and explanations about what is involved in applying to Leicester.


We offer an extensive range of catered and self-catered residences in the Oadby Student Village and across our City Living locations. Our accommodation webpages provide details of individual halls, facilities, pricing structure etc. You can look around the accommodation on an Open Day or a UCAS Visit Day.


Tuition fees, grants, scholarships, bursaries, student loans: the world of student finance can be complex and confusing, especially for school leavers and international students. We can help students – and their families – to understand the options available and to manage their finances.

Safety and security

Providing a safe and secure environment where students can live, study and learn is one of the most important duties of the University. The majority of our students will go through their time at Leicester without incident, thanks to the careful planning and support provided by our Security Office and our Student Support Services. If things do go wrong, however, there are staff here to help.

The University also has an excellent relationship with Leicestershire Police. One of our local beat officers became such a part of the University community that we gave him an Honorary Degree!

Working with external organisations, we have set up several schemes to help our students stay safe, including:

  • Drinkaware Crew: night marshalling scheme to support students on nights out in our O2 venue.
  • Safe Taxi Scheme: helping students get home safely even if they don’t have any money at the time.
  • C-Card Scheme: registration scheme providing free packs of condoms from multiple locations on and off campus.

Student support

The University provides a range of services for all our students including academic support, healthy living and career support. Dedicated support programmes are available for those with specific needs such as international students or disabled students. More general support is available for any student who might need help with educational or personal matters.

Students can access all our student support services through the Student Services Centre in the middle of campus. The Students' Union, which is independent of the University, also provides a range of support services.

Under-18 students

If your child will be under the age of 18 when they register with the University, it is essential that you complete an Under-18 Consent Form. If you live outside the UK, you must provide details of a guardian who is based in the UK, ideally in or near Leicester. This guardian should be an adult whom the University can contact in case of an emergency and who can act in loco parentis.

Guidance for students aged under 18 and their families

Student emergency contact details

Through online registration we ask students to provide the name and contact details for one person they would like us to contact in the event of an emergency. Students can nominate the person of their choice to be their emergency contact, provided that the person nominated is over the age of 18. For the majority of students the emergency contact is likely to be a parent or guardian, but could also be a sister, brother, spouse, partner, or another relative, or friend. 

We collect the emergency contact details for students under the age of 18 from a student’s parent or guardian prior to the student registering for their course, in line with the University’s Under 18s Policy.

We will only use student emergency contact details in accordance with the University’s policies and relevant UK data protection legislation.

Making contact

We will only contact a student’s emergency contact in two distinct types of circumstance:

  • In extreme circumstances in the student’s vital interests without requiring consent, where we have justifiable concerns for the life of the student
  • In other situations where there are serious concerns about the student’s health, safety or wellbeing and where it may be in the student’s best interests to do so, only if the student has consented to this. We ask for consent through online registration, and students can also review and update their consent at any time by logging into MyStudentRecord. We will not inform the emergency contact in relation to every concern raised about a student, but only after due consideration of the nature of the concern and the severity of the situation.
