Computer Science Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)

Overview

The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences from the University of Leicester is offering a GTA/PhD studentship in Computer Science starting in January 2026.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the supervisors of the GTA projects to discuss their suitability and eligibility before they apply. If you have interests in more than one GTA projects, please discuss with the GTA project supervisors and apply only to the one that interests you most.

1. Your CV

2. Your undergraduate and postgraduate education certificates and transcripts in English. If you have not done any postgraduate education, it is sufficient to upload your undergraduate education certificates and transcripts. If you have not graduated, upload your existing transcripts. 

3. A personal research statement having maximum of 3-4 pages. It should contain:

a. A section explaining why you want to take a PhD and why we should consider your application

b. A section describing your research and work experiences, or any experiences that you think is relevant to the project.

c. International candidates only - Give details of how you intend to fund the difference between UK and Overseas fees for the duration of your PhD.

d. A research proposal of the GTA project. For this, you can either:

  • Provide an outline of *your own* research proposal (but having discussed with potential supervisor first) or
  • Provide a summary of your understanding of the potential supervisor’s proposed project or
  • Other options such as discussing with the potential supervisor and together with the proposed supervisor, proposing a PhD project.

The evaluation of your project will include input from the potential supervisor and failure to contact the proposed supervisor may result in automatic rejection.

4. A teaching statement having maximum of 1 page. Summarize your teaching experience and say clearly what your role was, and how much independence you had. If space permits, you may optionally add a paragraph on your approach to teaching.  Failure to provide this document may result in a low score on the teaching-related criteria which may lower the overall score of the application. (upload this to the proposal section of the application)

5. Two academic references either upload references on signed headed paper or include the contact details of referees in the text boxes provided (The project supervisors cannot act as referees)

6. Your English language Test Scores, if you are an international student

7. Financial proof to show that you can fund the remaining tuition fee that is offset from the GTA studentship, if you are an international student 

8. In the supervisor section include the name of the supervisor and project title you want to apply for.

We will not consider your application if you apply for multiple GTA projects, or there are missing mandatory documents.

Funding

The Graduate Training Assistantship (GTA), means that you will be required to do some teaching, particularly lab demonstrating, as part of your training. GTAs allow research students to fund their PhD through part-time teaching work with the University.
 
Approximately 80% of your time will be spent on doctoral research leading to a PhD and 20% on GTA responsibilities. Training is provided to help Graduate Teaching Assistants develop their teaching related skills and enhance their professional competencies. 

GTA Studentships provide funding for 4 years to include:

  • Tuition fees at UK rates
  • A combined teaching and stipend payment (currently £20,780 for 2025/6.

International students must be able to demonstrate they are able pay the difference between UK and overseas fees. For 2025/6 entry this will be £18,864 per year of study.

Applicants who hold EU Settled or Pre-Settled status may be eligible for UK fees. Please email pgrapply@le.ac.uk with a share code so that we can verify your status (The share code we need starts with S)

Applicants with any other immigration status in the UK that may permit home fees please email the details to pgrapply@le.ac.uk so we can verify your status. If you have a share code this needs to be the one that starts with S.

Applicants must have or expect to hold at least the equivalent of a UK first or upper second-class degree in a relevant/related subject, or overseas equivalent.

The University of Leicester English language requirements apply. (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent listed at English language
