Your future tutors in French, Italian, Spanish and Translation Studies are waiting in the wings as you launch yourself on your academic journey. We’re so pleased that you’ve chosen us to be part of your global adventures!
We are holding three Offer Holder Days so that you can get a taste of what it’s like to study with us. These will be held in February and March 2019.
What will you learn as a Modern Languages student?
We believe that an education in Modern Languages, with its combined focus on linguistic and cultural fluency, is a power for good in our increasingly globalised world. Modern Languages students understand and articulate themselves as global citizens. They are intellectually curious and open-minded individuals in a world that needs those qualities more than ever.
At Leicester, we’ll work with you to engage your creativity from the moment you land in one of our classes. Our degrees provide learning opportunities in all kinds of fields of study – language and linguistics, of course, but also film and other visual cultures, literature and the arts, cultural histories, sociological topics such as gender studies and migration studies… the list goes on!

A space for exploring
As you can see from the descriptions of our modules, Modern Languages students have the chance to explore the world from the classroom, through the rich range of cultural studies and language topics that form part of your degree… but of course, there is so much more on the horizon.
One small step...
Our unique, and fully-funded, three-week Summer Schools provide our students with a stepping stone between the start of their studies and the exciting opportunities of the Year Abroad with an extended stay in a country of relevance to their target languages.
We arrange your travel, accommodation with a host family, and intensive language classes at highly respected language teaching institutions. You will get to spend time exploring the local culture with your Leicester coursemates, make friends from around the world in the multilingual classrooms where you will study, and come home with great memories and a boost in both your language skills and your personal confidence… Ready to take on second year and progress towards the Year Abroad!
One giant leap...
The Year Abroad, a key element of all of our degree programmes, is a journey in every possible way: geographical, of course, but also personal and academic. It is a major factor in the development of the diverse skill set and broad knowledge horizons of modern languages graduates. And a vital part, too, therefore, of what makes our graduates so highly employable in the globalised workplace.
