Undergraduate

Our courses are specially tailored to provide you with a broad understanding of the fundamental concepts in geology, as well as enabling you to pursue your own interests.

All of our programmes are modular and our specialist degrees allow you to focus on the areas of Applied and Environmental Geology, Geophysics or Palaeontology.

All of our courses are accredited by the Geological Society, demonstrating that our degrees offer high-quality teaching as well as providing the skills necessary for a career as a professional geologist.

Our courses

  • Our flexible degree programmes include a common core during the first year, meaning you can switch between degrees at the end of the first year (subject to meeting any specific entry requirements e.g. A-levels).
  • All the programmes provide degree-specific modules from the second year onwards. In the third year (and fourth, if applicable) you will also have a range of option modules to allow you to study the topics that interest you most.
  • We also ensure that it is possible to transfer between the three-year BSc and the four-year MGeol degrees - so you can graduate with the qualification most appropriate for your future career.

From environmental hazards and energy supply to locating natural resources, there are a number of geological issues facing our society – and this degree will equip you with the practical skills to deal with them.

Geology with Palaeontology BSc (with optional year in industry)
3-4 years, full-time | UCAS Code: F641
Life. Evolution. Extinction. They might be huge concepts, but you can easily break them down through the lens of palaeontology. If you love fossils, and what they can tell us, this geology degree is for you.

Geology with Foundation Year BSc (with optional year in industry and optional year abroad)
4-5 years, full-time | UCAS Code: F699
There’s always another way to follow your passion. If you don’t quite have the entry requirements to study geography at Leicester, this STEM Foundation Year degree is for you.

MGeol degrees

Geology MGeol (with optional year in industry and optional year abroad)
4-5 years, full-time | UCAS Code: F601
The more we study the earth, the more questions we have, the more problems we face. Geared towards undertaking important PhD research, this degree will show you how to become a crucial part of this equation.
