Plants Wow!

An introduction to the exciting world of plants for KS1 and Year 3

The day starts in the classroom with an introduction. This includes looking at several plants, talking about how they're different and where they live.

Children visit different areas of the Botanic Garden in groups and complete a simple booklet.Teacher and children by cacti in the desert house at the university of Leicester Botanic Garden

  1. In the classroom area, the children plant seeds in individual pots to take back to school.
  2. Herbs - smelling and finding out their uses.
  3. Desert House - drawing different cacti on paper and in sand.
  4. Rainforest - matching items to plants that are used to make them.
  5. Woodland - make bark and leaf rubbings.
  6. Parts of plants - children collect materials to make a natural sculpture of a tree, which they label. For Year 3, this also includes labelling the functions of the plant.

Groups usually complete three or four activities in the morning and the remaining in the afternoon.

In addition, there will be special things to look out for and everyone has the opportunity to punch the soft Redwood bark!

The day finishes with a plenary to discuss everything that has been seen and learnt.
