Botanic Garden and Attenborough Arboretum
Islamic Art
For KS2, use the inspiration of plants at the Botanic Garden to create a piece of Islamic style art
After a teacher led introduction looking at examples of Islamic Art and the how plants are used, the children go around the Garden to sketch different parts of plants they see. This can include visiting the Botanic Garden glasshouses.
Once returning to the classroom, the children use their sketches to create stencils of plant parts. These are used to make a repeated pattern to create their own artistic pieces. Years 3 and 4 build their work onto a spiralling stem shape, and years 5 and 6 create a pattern in a twelve sided shape.
- Duration: Half a day. To make a full day, Islamic Art can be combined with our maths programme comparing the habitats in the glasshouses, or orienteering.
- Numbers: One class for half or full-day. Two classes for a full day only.
