Bear Hunt

For Foundation stage children, focusing on literacy and art

Children and school staff walking through a woodlandBear Hunt is a day of active learning, designed for Foundation stage children. The day follows the story, 'We're going on a Bear Hunt'. The children are made to feel like they are part of a magical story through the introduction. They also consider the equipment needed to go on a Bear Hunt.

We chant the Bear Hunt rhyme and go outside to all the places mentioned in the book by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury - through the swishy-swashy grass, the stumble trip forest and finally finish back in the classroom to hide under the covers.

After snack-time in the classroom, the children go back outside in up to five small groups. They re-visit each of the places to complete different related art or literacy activities. This includes mud printing, making leaf and bark rubbings, creating a grass picture, and playing with water while thinking of watery words.

After lunch (which can be eaten outside or in the classroom), each group collates all their work by sticking them on long pieces of paper to show their journey. This includes drawing around their feet, writing their names and drawing the bear cave.

The day finishes under our special story time tree, hearing the ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ story.
