Dragon Stories

Maths, English, Science and Geography for year 3/4

The day starts with a taught introduction. The children discover a dragon is planning to visit the Botanic Garden and it needs the children to complete a range of investigations.

Three activities are inside and three outside and everyone rotates around so all activities are completed by the end of the day.children under trees

  1. Exploring using a map. Find six places from a map to look for similarities and differences. Think about weather vanes and compass points.
  2. Identifying Trees Examine five trees, considering their leaves, seeds, trunk and shape and use our special booklet to identify them.
  3. Dragon Shelters Find sticks, leaves and other natural materials to build a shelter for a little dragon.
  4. Dominoes and Dice Use maths skills to play dominoes and a Roman dice game.
  5. Mirror Patterns  Building colourful symmetrical patterns using mirrors and practical materials. 
  6. Dragon stories Use puppets to help create their own dragon story on a a story strip.

All resources are provided, along with guidance for accompanying adults. Child looking at mirror pattern

  • Availability: All year
  • Age group: Years 3/4
  • Numbers: Up to two classes per day (70 maximum)
  • Duration: A whole day; a 20 minute taught introduction followed by 25 minutes for each activity area
  • Organisation: The children need to be organised in three groups for one class and in five or six small groups for two classes, each accompanied by an adult provided by the school
