Exhibition to shed light on important moments in our lives

A free public exhibition combining poetry and images organised by our University and Leicester Cathedral will be running from 25 May to 10 June at Leicester Cathedral.

The exhibition, titled ‘Defining Moments - Poetry in the Cathedral’, has been organised by Dr Mary Ann Lund from the School of Arts and the Revd Canon Rosy Fairhurst, Canon Chancellor of the Cathedral.

The installation takes the form of a trail of poems and photographs selected by Dr Lund which connect with different objects and spaces around the Cathedral.

Visitors can follow the trail round in their own time and reflect on the writing and images as they go.

Dr Lund said: “I'm very interested in the special place that cathedrals occupy in our communities, and in the relationship between literature and space.

“All of the chosen poems are united by an emphasis on 'Defining Moments': significant moments of the here and now. They share an interest in attentiveness, whether that means being awake to the wild beauty of nature, or noticing a stranger and welcoming him in; confronting the presence of death, or simply observing the change of a season and the feelings it brings.

“I hope that this installation will allow visitors to encounter poetry in a new way, and enable them to reflect on defining moments in their own lives.”

As part of the exhibition, a free event entitled ‘Incense, Votive, Vanishing: An Evening of Reflection', taking place on 2 June at 6:00pm at Leicester Cathedral, will further explore how poetry can help us reflect in new ways on our lives.

The free public exhibition ‘Defining Moments - Poetry in the Cathedral’ will run from 25 May to 10 June 2017 at Leicester Cathedral.
