Study

We offer a range of undergraduate courses accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), enabling you to gain a broad psychological knowledge and range of career skills.

We also offer a wide range of postgraduate courses and research degrees (MPhil, PhD, PsyD and DClinPsy), and have received a high number of commendations for good practice in recent BPS accreditation visits for both undergraduate and postgraduate activities.

The value of psychological expertise is recognised in all walks of life. You’ll focus on forensic, occupational and clinical psychology, working with applied psychologists and carrying out research that will set you up for a career in the field.

Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience BSc (with optional year abroad)

How can we harness the brain’s activity to better understand how we think, feel and behave? This is what cognitive neuroscience is all about. And studied side-by-side with psychology, the answers have an impressive range of real-world applications.

Biological Sciences (Neuroscience) BSc (with optional year in industry or year abroad)

No computer is more powerful or complex than the human brain. And you’ll get to study the central role it plays in our nervous system – and what can happen when it goes wrong. This degree includes the option to change your specialism in your second year.

Biological Sciences (Zoology) BSc (with optional year in industry or year abroad)

Zoology covers the behaviour, ecology and evolution of everything within the animal kingdom. Alongside the fundamental theories of zoology, you’ll also gain hands-on lab and fieldwork experience. This degree includes the option to change your specialism in your second year.

Accreditation

Our teaching is powered by cutting-edge research conducted in the primary domains of neuroscience, cognitive science and social and applied sciences, and is accredited for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society. You will get the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the BPS on all the courses we offer, provided you obtain at least a lower second class (2:2) honours degree.

Student Psychology Society

We have an active Student Psychology Society which organises various events and has a lively social programme.

Active research ethos

All students studying psychology for three years have an opportunity to participate in our research programmes during their final year.

We are very active in research, and our work enjoys a national and international reputation. Much of our current research is applied in nature, and includes:

  • Studies of cognitive biases and heuristics in human judgement and decision making spatial learning
  • Effects of "burn out" in the medical profession
  • Reading development
  • Eyewitness testimony
  • Criminal profiling
  • Interviewing techniques and expert evidence in court
  • The role of visual attention in word recognition

Postgraduate

Research degrees

A postgraduate student studyingAs a PhD student you will be an integral part of the academic life of the School, which aims to deliver high-quality supervision through experienced academics who are actively researching and publishing and have international reputations for the quality of their research.

We aim to develop and maintain research of international quality. Our experts have an international reputation across a variety of fields, including neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, visual cognition, word recognition and reading, game theory, and aspects of applied psychology.

Our research degrees

Doctor of Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy)
Our DClinPsy programme aims to enhance the psychological health of the community and the delivery of NHS healthcare services generally by training skilled and autonomous clinical psychologists.

PhD or MPhil
Our PhD or MPhil programmes allow you to gain training and experience in conducting high-quality empirical research in Psychology, in preparation for a career in academia or research.

Duration

  • PhD (minimum registration: three years full-time; four years part-time)
  • MPhil (minimum registration: one year full-time; two years part-time)
