“Following my graduation from MRes Research Methods in Psychology, I work as an Activity Coordinator. I coordinate therapeutic intervention activities with patients at a rehabilitation psychiatric hospital to promote their independence towards discharge in the community.
My four years at Leicester were life changing. After completing my bachelor’s degree in psychology, I went straight on to do my master’s. It was an easy choice to make as I felt incredibly supported throughout my studies. My supervisors, lecturers and tutors supported me to become a better professional and to communicate my ideas more effectively.
Leicester offers so many opportunities to get involved — not only to develop personally and professionally, but to also make an impact on the experiences of others during and after your time at university. The strong relationships I built with my tutors, lecturers, supervisors and friends created a supportive environment. Without Leicester, I don’t think I would have been able to achieve the big things I wanted, and that’s all down to feeling like I belonged.
The best thing about my MRes course was feeling free to learn without judgement. The meaningful guidance I received from the course staff helped me to meet the high expectations I set for myself and develop the skills needed to achieve a First at master’s level. By far, the best part of my course experience was coming to university each day and feeling like I truly belonged.
My course helped me grow into a confident and effective student, and I always felt supported. Even though creating and presenting our projects was stressful at times, the support we shared built a level of trust within my team that I wouldn’t have had before university.
Working in teams alongside supportive relationships, gave me a clear sense of what a healthy and positive workplace should feel like. That experience taught me to recognise — and later recreate — that same supportive environment in a professional setting, something I feel was only achievable because of my time at Leicester.
The interpersonal skills I developed while working in teams has been essential to succeeding in my job, especially learning how to ask for help when I need it. Leicester gave me the space to build that confidence and carry it into my professional life. It’s now a strength I’m always praised for at work.
My advice to current students is don’t be scared to try new things! Get involved in as many things as you can. Leicester gives you a supportive environment to practise, grow and discover what you are capable of.”
