Ever wondered why laughter is good for you?

World-leading neuroscientist and stand-up comedian, Professor Sophie Scott, CBE (University College London), is bringing her unique perspective on the science of humour to Leicester this month (May). 

Sophie will be speaking at the University of Leicester’s School of Psychology and Vision Sciences flagship event, the Sluckin Lecture, on Wednesday 21 May. 

The event celebrates academic excellence and intellectual curiosity and will see Sophie discuss the science of laughter and communication using her trademark wit and engaging perspective. 

Speaking about the lecture, aptly titled, ‘What’s the point in studying laughter?’, Sophie said: “In this talk I’ll explore the evolution, psychology and neuroscientific aspects of laughter. I’ll explore the critical roles that laughter can play for humans, both in development and adulthood, and argue that it represents an essential window onto human social bonding and affection.”

The Sluckin Lecture is an annual event at the University to commemorate Professor Wladyslaw Sluckin (1919–1985), one of the original Psychology Department members who went onto lead it from 1973 until retirement in 1984. 

He was also Editor of the British Journal of Psychology from 1967 to 1973 and had a lasting influence on generations of students and colleagues. Professor Sluckin remains an inspiration to the School of Psychology and to British psychology in general.

The free event takes place in Lecture Theatre 1 in the George Davies Centre in Lancaster Road from 5-6pm on 21 May and is open to all. It will be followed by a wine reception in the atrium.
