Student attends European film premiere as part of degree placement

A student has been given the opportunity to meet veterans of the entertainment industry and attend a European blockbuster film premiere as part of their degree studies at our University.

Gregory Allen (pictured), who is currently studying BSc Computing with Year in Industry, has embarked upon a year-long placement with global entertainment company Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.

The placement has allowed Gregory to attend the European premiere of the Ben Affleck-led film The Accountant as well as meet veterans in the film industry, including a colourist who worked on The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter films.

He has also been given the opportunity to engage in a number of practical activities building upon the skills he has developed while studying at the University, including co-managing UK theatrical releases of Warner Bros. films, troubleshooting issues with global offices and cinema chains and handling sensitive pre-release material internally.

Gregory said: “As I would like to move into VFX when I graduate, having the opportunity to meet and learn from people considered the best in their particular discipline is very motivating. I really enjoy my job and cannot wait to get to work in the morning. I am given real responsibilities and projects to work on and have already learnt so much in just a few months.”

At the University of Leicester Gregory was President of the student Film Society, which allowed him gain relevant knowledge and skills which helped during the placement interview process. Combined support, guidance and preparation from the Career Development Service and the University industrial placement office prepared Gregory to compete and secure the exclusive placement opportunity.

Gregory added: "The year in industry adds genuine value to your degree when you graduate. Your placement allows you to apply all of the knowledge you learn at university and learn new things you cannot learn in a lecture."
