Turkish Minister in University visit

The Turkish Deputy Minister for Economy Adnan Yildirim, was in the East Midlands as the guest of the Leicester Asian Business Association (LABA) to further enhance Bilateral Trade, investment and research links between Turkey and the Midlands.

The Minister visited the Rolls Royce Aero Engines Factory in Derby to announce a $300 million order for new Trent Engines for Stirling Airlines Cargo planes. LABA also lobbied the Minister for a Turkish Investment and Trade Satellite office in Leicester. 

The delegation also visited the University of Leicester which has an MoU with LABA.  The delegation met with Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise Professor Kevin Schürer and with the Head of the Department of Economics Professor Chris Wallace.

Professor Schürer said: “The University of Leicester was delighted to host a meeting with the Minister and his delegation during his visit to the East Midlands. As a leading research and enterprise focused university we were keen to explore opportunities for future collaborations, especially around the commercial translation of our internationally renowned research.”

Professor Wallace added: “It was a very valuable experience to meet with the Turkish Deputy Minister. We have many excellent Turkish students in the Economics Department, studying at all levels, and we are very keen to attract more. It also provided an opportunity to speak about some of the exciting research projects currently underway in the Department."
