The International Year One Human Resource Management provides a pathway for you if you do not meet the standard entry criteria for our Human Resource Management BA.
Throughout your first year, you will benefit from enhanced support. This starts with four weeks of intensive English language and academic skills development in August, before you begin your academic modules. The International Year One places a strong emphasis on equipping with you with the skills you need to succeed in your studies. From day one, you’ll be part of a vibrant and diverse student and academic community.
All of our Business and Management/HRM/Marketing degrees share the same first year, which means that at the end of your International Year One, you can switch to either of the following degrees and tailor your studies to your interests and strengths:
Our courses give you a comprehensive insight into a broad range of subjects and provide you with an in-depth understanding of contemporary business and management techniques. By studying topics such as operations management, strategy, business in digital economies and international business, the course will open up a wide range of opportunities for professional development, equipping you with the skills you need to become an effective and socially responsible manager in both local and global environments.
You will also be supported by the School of Business Careers and Employability Team who offer a dedicated programme of support, opportunities and events, and will help you take your first steps towards a successful graduate career.
On successful completion of your International Year One, you are guaranteed progression to the second year of your degree.

Entry requirements
Satisfactory completion of A-levels, or first year of an overseas university degree with good grades or equivalent.
English Language Requirements
IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

If you are resident outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, you will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

You will benefit from our new £16 million School of Business campus, Brookfield. You will study here, as well as on the University's bustling main campus, just a 10 minute walk away. Brookfield is easily accessible to both The Village and The City accommodation using the free University shuttle bus.
Brookfield features a variety of teaching and learning spaces including state-of-the-art seminar rooms and lecture theatres, as well as plenty of study space both for groups and if you want a little bit of quiet independent study.

- Academic English Language and Academic Skills for Business and Management (August start)
This module will give you the essential academic language and skills you need for successful degree study. You will benefit from four weeks of intensive study in small groups before you start your academic modules, followed by ongoing support throughout your first year. - Getting Ahead as an International Student

Teaching and learning
You will start your studies in August, with an intensive four weeks of academic English language and skills development. For this part of your course, you will study in small groups for up to 21 hours per week.
During your first year you will typically have 9-10 hours a week of timetabled sessions – around 6 hours of lectures and 3-4 hours of seminars or small group work. Lectures will provide you with the framework and foundational knowledge for each subject, whilst seminars, held in smaller groups, provide you with the opportunity to discuss key ideas with your tutor and peers.
A variety of teaching methods are used with the aim of creating a stimulating environment in which you are encouraged to develop your learning skills and to actively engage and participate in your learning process.
Assessment methods varied to allow you to develop a range of academic and transferable skills throughout your programme and these include individual essays, examinations, presentations and group activities.
Independent learning
When not attending lectures, seminars or other timetabled sessions you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for exams. To help with your independent learning, you can access the Library and our social study spaces in halls of residence.

Academic support
Our AccessAbility Centre offers support and practical help for students with dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties, including physical, mental health or mobility difficulties, deafness, or visual impairment.
Teaching staff
You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. PhD research students who have undertaken teacher training may also contribute to the teaching of seminars under the supervision of the module leader. Our teaching is informed by the research we do.
