FuturePlus Programme

What is the FuturePlus Programme?

A six-month programme consisting of fortnightly after school sessions and regular trips from January to June of Year 10. The programme focuses on a range of areas from subject and career insights, developing transferrable skills and supporting student confidence with the aims of increasing the cohort’s knowledge surrounding the pathways available to them and the opportunities within higher education. 

Who can attend?

The programme is currently partnered with four local schools in Leicester with a total cohort of 60 students. 

Impact of the programme

Our recent evaluation report of cohort 1 has shown that the programme had significant positive impact. 

Students were asked to rate their agreement to the following statements from 1 = Definitely Disagree to 8 = Definitely Agree. 

The following percentages are of students who marked a 7 or 8 in response to the following statements. 

I feel informed about university study or lifestyle.

I understand which subjects at university create links to certain careers.

I understand what skills can support my future planning.

Catch a Cold!

Medicine Session

When was it?

Where was it?
At school in an afterschool session

What skills did you use during this session?
I learnt how to take a medical history. 

What did you do? 
We asked people about what they did in the past couple of days to see if we could work out if and why they were ill or not. We also learnt some medical facts. 

What is one key thing you learnt from this session?
To help someone if they become ill and became more responsible.

One word to describe the session:
Doctor!

Space Invasion

Trip to the National Space Centre

Where was it?
The National Space Centre 

What skills did you use during this session?
Teamwork, Communication, Listening skills

What did you do? 
We built a rocket and shot it up into the air and made a disc hover on the table. We also engaged in activities like reaction time and saw how heavy the planets were by trying to lift fake planets. The planetarium was the best thing from the whole experience. 

What is one key thing you learnt from this session?
Real life physics and cool crafts!

Preventing Death

CPR Training session

Where was it?
At school in an afterschool session

What skills did you use during this session?
Concentration

What did you do? 
When preventing death there are important things to know. First you need to keep their heart beating. I learnt CPR training and then I used a dummy I kept in time with the rhythm. I got a 90% score! 

What is one key thing you learnt from this session?
How to do CPR effectively

Find the Imposter

CSI Day at the University of Leicester

Where was it?
University of Leicester

What skills did you use during this session?
Teamwork, Critical thinking, Hardwork, Communication

What did you do?
Find the imposter and who committed the ‘murder’. We had to work together to solve the case and we met people who did different sessions with us to assist us. We took part in fingerprinting, criminology and law and teamwork and communication skills were built. 

What is one key thing you learnt from this session?
You have to work together as a team to achieve a certain goal. Teamwork is vital is helping us work well in our groups.

One word to describe the session:
Amazing
