The PERFORM trial

The SoME substudy

About the project

Some participants will have the opportunity to join a private, moderated support group – a virtual space where they can connect with others taking part in the study.

Research has shown that being part of a support group can lead to a range of social and health benefits especially for people with long-term conditions. This sub study is focused on understanding whether being part of a similar environment can help participants stay engaged and complete their involvement in the Perform trial.

The group is designed to:

  • Provide encouragement and peer support
  • Help participants stay connected for the duration of the trial
  • Offer a space to ask questions and access useful information
  • Facilitate positive informal discussion

Is it safe?

While hosted on the Facebook platform, the group is designed to function as a secure digital support community, not a typical social media space.

The group is:

  • Closed – only participants with a direct link can request to join
  • Moderated by trained staff and peer moderators
  • Purpose-led: the group includes clear guidance, community rules, and reminders of its supportive aim.
  • Privacy settings- the platform offers enhanced privacy and security features

Do I have to join?

Joining the group is completely optional and will not affect your participation in the Perform trial. You can leave or disengage at any time.

How do I access the group?

If your site is part of the Social Media sub-trial, you’ll receive a QR code or direct link after enrolment. This will take you straight to the moderated group.

What if I don’t have a Facebook account or don’t know how to use the platform?

A simple step-by-step guide is available to help you set up an account and join the group safely. If you need further support, your site team can refer you to the Perform social media coordinator, who will be happy to assist you directly.
