Filmmaker and barrister Haresh Sood will return to the University of Leicester for a special event exploring how film can bring justice, law and the legal profession to wider audiences.

Thirty years after beginning his legal studies at Leicester, Haresh will return to campus to share details of his latest feature film project.

Taking place on Wednesday 21 October 2026, from 6pm to 8pm at the Sir Bob Burgess Building, the evening will bring together alumni, students, staff and members of the legal profession.

Guests will receive a preview of the new film project, which will be announced on the night. The event will also include a showcase recognising legal professionals from across the UK who have made a significant contribution to the legal system.

The film is scheduled to begin production in 2027 and will be filmed at the University of Leicester.

The event will also include a special tribute celebrating the life and legacy of Manjula Sood MBE, LL.D, FRSA (1945-2025), a former graduate of the University of Leicester, recognising her contribution to Leicester communities and public life.

Alongside his work as a barrister, Haresh works as a film director. His first film, My Niece’s Big Fat Delhi Wedding, was showcased at more than 100 film festivals globally. His second film, Cama Sood Hara, has been on an international cinema tour since 2024 and stars his chocolate Labrador, Pancho.

The legal showcase will recognise professionals working across human rights, immigration, family law, asylum, education, employment, crime, legal costs and access to justice. Those featured will include Usha Sood, Ravi Sethi, Sally Denton, Charles Price and representatives of Costsdragon Ltd.

The event is supported by the Festival of Media Stories and Leicester Law School at the University of Leicester.

The event will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Leicester and the University of Leicester’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nishan Canagarajah.
