Discover the region’s rich heritage at free family friendly celebration event

A free family friendly event which puts the spotlight on the rich heritage of our city and region takes place at the University of Leicester on Saturday 21 March.

The annual Celebration of Heritage public event will mark the third anniversary of the University’s Heritage Hub and is in partnership with Literary Leicester festival.

Established in 2023, the Heritage Hub brings people and organisations together to connect, explore and celebrate the rich heritage of Leicester and surrounding region.

More than 50 organisations from across the region will be at the event, where visitors will be able to explore local museum collections, hear fascinating stories of the rich history and heritage of our city and region and find out what’s happening at upcoming festivals and heritage events.

There will be hands-on activities, ranging from leathercraft and weaving to Morris dancing and an archaeological dig pit.

A new attraction – The University Heritage Discovery Zone – has also been planned for the event. The zone will allow visitors to journey from the origins of life on Earth through to cutting-edge space research, explore ancient diet and medicine and try their hand at life-saving skills.

Professor Sarah Scott, Sarah Scott, Heritage Hub Director, said: “Our Celebration of Heritage brings together an exceptional network of partners, volunteers, students and colleagues. We are delighted to welcome visitors to our campus for an afternoon of discovery, with engaging displays and hands-on activities for all ages.

“The event will showcase an incredible range of research and creativity from across our city and region, including living history and traditional craft demonstrations, and research spanning the origins of life on earth to space flight. We would like to extend a huge thanks to the organisations and teams who are supporting the event and hope you will join us to celebrate our region’s heritage.”

The Celebration of Heritage runs from midday to 4pm on Saturday 21 March, in the Percy Gee Building.
