Cardiovascular research centre is seeking the next generation of researchers

A ground-breaking new cardiovascular research centre is forging ahead with plans to bring on the next generation of researchers.
The multi-million pound BHF Leicester Centre of Research Excellence, led by Professor Andre Ng from the University of Leicester’s Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, was officially opened last month (September).
It aims to turbocharge research into causes of common and rare cardiovascular conditions, as well as refining appropriate treatments and interventions.
Based at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, it provides a research base focusing on three key areas. Heart specialist Professor Gerry McCann, whose research team is working to develop, test and refine new ways of treatment will focus on cardiovascular interventions.
Specialist vascular surgeon, Professor Matt Bown, who is pioneering research in vascular disease, will lead the discovery team to identify causes of cardiovascular disease and to predict who is at most risk of developing disease for targeting preventative strategies.
Professor Kamlesh Khunti, an internationally recognised leader in ethnic health research, will lead the team to concentrate on transforming research and care for people with cardiovascular conditions across all populations and ethnicities.
Centre leaders are now looking for the next generation of researchers in this field to come and work alongside them to help make real-world differences to patients.
Professor Ng said: “We are extremely ambitious for the work of the centre and what we together can achieve for cardiovascular patients. This collaboration between the next generation of researchers working across a multitude of cardiovascular disease areas and non-medical disciplines will help bring the necessary innovations and breakthroughs needed in this important area of health and medicine – breakthroughs which will ultimately help to save lives so we’re keen to hear from candidates with the relevant expertise to join us in our mission.”
Some £3 million for the centre came from the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) highly competitive Research Excellence Award scheme, match funded by the University and with additional money from the University Hospitals of Leicester, taking the total investment in cardiovascular disease research to around £7 million.
