Award-winning US medical correspondent to appear at international empathy conference

Dr Jonathan LaPook

CBS News’ award-winning Chief Medical Correspondent Jonathan LaPook will be among the world-class speakers appearing at the Global Empathy in Healthcare Network Symposium 2025.

Dr LaPook is Professor of Medicine at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, an internist and gastroenterologist at NYU Langone Health, and the Founder and President of the NYU Langone Empathy Project, which seeks to promote a culture of empathy in medicine.

He will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Global Empathy in Healthcare Network Symposium which will help healthcare professionals, researchers and educators to understand how care can be rehumanised in an era of technological advancements and remote interactions.

Professor Jeremy Howick, director of the Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare at the University of Leicester, and co-founder, with Catherine Eyres, of the Global Empathy in Healthcare Network, said: “Dr LaPook is hugely respected for his award-winning work with CBS News and his contribution to empathetic healthcare has been phenomenal.

“He founded the NYU Langone Empathy Project and its team of leaders from the worlds of medicine, entertainment, education and technology is helping to train healthcare providers to be more empathetic, compassionate and effective.

“Their work is vitally important because there is growing evidence that empathy in healthcare improves patient outcomes, makes their experience of healthcare better and helps healthcare professionals to cope with the pressures of fast-paced healthcare systems.

“This symposium is an incredible opportunity to learn from a giant in the world of empathetic healthcare and should not be missed by healthcare professionals, researchers, educators and advocates in the field.

“We’re so grateful to Dr LaPook, and our other hugely knowledgeable speakers, for sharing their wealth of expertise with us.”

Since joining CBS in 2006, Dr LaPook has done more than 1,400 reports, contributing to CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, CBS Mornings, CBS Sunday Morning, Face the Nation and CBS News Radio.

A winner of five Emmy awards, two Edward R. Murrow awards and a Gracie Award, Dr LaPook was also a George Foster Peabody Award finalist for two groundbreaking 60 Minutes reports investigating sexual abuse of elite gymnasts and was recognised by the Webby Awards for his documentary series Doc Dot Com.

At the Global Empathy in Healthcare Network Symposium, Dr LaPook will deliver a session entitled ‘ROE: Return on Empathy.’ It will examine whether empathy translates to the bottom line and, if so, can it be taught, learned and scaled within a large institution.

The Global Empathy in Healthcare Network Symposium will take place in Leicester on Monday, 15 September, and Tuesday, 16 September.

Empathic healthcare experts are invited to put together poster and abstract submissions for the event to showcase their work on the international stage.

The deadline for abstract submissions for posters and oral presentations relating to the themes of Teaching, Research, Policy, or integrated topics spanning these three areas, is Wednesday, 16 April.

Proposals are also welcome for interactive educational workshops on subjects such as research methods, teaching techniques, policy and practice issues or other skill development topics.

Early bird rates for symposium tickets are available until Friday, 16 May.
