Clearing trip to see the University of Leicester changed Tom’s direction of study
When Tom Walters missed out on his first-choice university place, the next step should have seen him accept his reserve choice – until a visit to the University of Leicester during Clearing changed everything.
With his A-level results seeing him just fall short of entry requirements to his preferred course, Tom was left to mull over his insurance choice.
However, he wasn’t convinced his second choice was right for him, particularly after he found out more about the Psychology degree at Leicester.
“I had a conversation with Clearing staff at Leicester, who confirmed the University would offer me a place, so we jumped in the car to have a look at the campus,” said Tom, who is from Stourbridge in the West Midlands.
“I was really impressed by the students who showed us around, and I was especially drawn to the idea of the student village in Oadby. As soon as I got home I had to make the scary decision of rejecting the offer I had, in order to enter Clearing and accept a place from Leicester – it was definitely the right choice.”
Speaking about the Clearing process at the University, Tom said: “The staff were friendly, helpful and reassuring – clearly explaining the whole process to me to ensure it was as easy as possible.”
The 20-year-old, who will graduate next year, is thoroughly enjoying everything the University and Leicester has to offer.
He said the course covers everything from social psychology to neuroscience and really gives a broad overview of the subject. As well as the course offering huge variety and interest, Tom also enjoys the social aspect of life at Leicester.
He said: “I’m a member of the film society and it’s great fun being able to hang out with so many people with shared interests.”
Tom is hoping to go into a career path in mental health and is also undertaking work experience with Sandwell Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.
Asked what advice he would give to others going through Clearing, he said: “It may seem daunting at first, but trust in the process – the staff are there to support you. Although it may not seem like it on results day, there are always options."
