IBM to create first UK services centre in Leicester

The University of Leicester has played an important role in securing the move of global information technology company IBM to the city.

The University was part of the inward investment team and the multinational will work with the University in research and development as well as to harness the talent of its graduate workforce.

The centre will create up to 300 jobs over three years, enabling IBM to extend its technology services to UK-based clients.

IBM Services Centre: Leicester will be based on New Walk in the heart of the city. It is the UK’s first IBM services centre.

President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester Professor Paul Boyle said:

“The University of Leicester is proud to be associated with another international blue-chip company. Our world-class knowledge and research expertise has proved to be critical in attracting inward investment to the region, helping to boost prosperity. The work of our scientists in disciplines such as Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering provide a foundation for innovative research and development and we look forward to building a strong relationship with IBM in these and other fields.

“The University is committed to advancing the frontiers in education, research and enterprise.  This is one of a number of new partnerships which will further build our innovative approaches to knowledge exchange.”

Raj Patel, Engagement Manager in the University’s Career Development Service, has been a part of the behind the scenes discussion that led to IBM’s move to Leicester.  He said: “It’s great news for the city and our graduates. The fact we produce skilled graduates at Leicester helped beat off stiff competition from other cities and, I’m pleased to say, made Leicester the natural choice. Attracting an employer like IBM also underlines the contribution that the University makes to the City both in terms of its research and in developing its skill base.”

IBM Services Centre: Leicester will employ graduates and experienced professionals who have technical backgrounds or who show an aptitude for IT and want to pursue a career in the industry.

It will also offer internships and apprenticeships to harness the best talent from across the city and region.
