Kirsty Woodward headshotWe are Estates and Campus Services (ECS). We are responsible for maintaining, developing and operating the University’s properties to support our strategy and ensure that we deliver the service that our students, staff and visitors want and expect.

The University’s estate extends to a total site area of 95 hectares, comprising a non-residential estate of 110 buildings covering 200,000m2 and a residential estate of 191 properties totalling around 100,000m2. The majority of the academic facilities are located to the south of Leicester city centre with a main campus supplemented by a number of satellite properties nearby. The residences are in two locations: The City, on the edge of main campus, and The Village, which is around three miles away. We also have strong links with several hospital sites in and around Leicester.

Campus Services

We look after the University’s day-to-day operations, helping to manage and maintain the campus and deliver excellent customer service. Campus Services comprises the Security, Accommodation, Leicester Conferences, Portering and Cleaning, Grounds and Gardens and Print Services teams.

The University Security team is a diverse, innovative team that is passionate about delivering fantastic customer service whilst supporting and looking after our community in order to keep them safe. We operate 24/7, 365 days of the year and offer a service across the whole of the University including our University accommodation.

Print Services is at the forefront of technology offering multi-colour printing on various substrates from student thesis, mailshots with variable data, to dressing the campus with vibrant campaigns. Our clients are internal departments, students, external individuals and businesses.

As leading event specialists, Leicester Conferences is the ideal choice for conferences, residential and day events, and educational camps. The Leicester Conferences team support clients with planning and managing events across the University’s facilities. We also offer a place to stay at our dedicated hotel and conference venue, College Court. With 123 beds and dedicated facilities we offer year-round Bed and Breakfast at competitive rates and host a range of business and private events. The on-site bar is also open to all seven-days a week.

Leicester Services Partnership (LSP) is the University’s catering and retail operator and a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Leicester. LSP operate all commercial activities across the University, including retail, hospitality, bars, merchandising, events, such as the O2 Academy and Starbucks. The LSP team always endeavour to provide a consistent customer service experience, inspirational spaces to eat, drink, relax, reflect, learn and socialise and offer something entirely new for our customers. LSP operate a range of outlets from Queens Pizza and Pasta in the Percy Gee Building to the Village Pub at the Oadby Student Village.

If you are visiting campus or are looking for somewhere safe and convenient to park in Leicester, we offer parking at the Freemen’s Common Multi-Storey Car Park (MSCP). The car park offers pay-as-you-go cashless parking 24/7, 365 days of the year. We also offer 28 dedicated EV charging bays.

Print Services: 

Estates

Estates is made up of four areas: Project Management, Estate and Space Management, Maintenance and Engineering, and Energy and Carbon Management.

Project Management includes delivering all major and minor projects relating to buildings and infrastructure ensuring that time, cost and quality targets are met. Projects are managed through four gateways and up to eight stages including briefing, design, construction before being handed over and entering use. 

The Space Management team work to ensure that the University’s space is proactively managed to support the activities and strategic aims of our University, so that the campus is used effectively to maximise facilities, and promote financial and environmentally sustainable use of space. We plan allocation of spaces, including decants and reallocations to support major projects and remodelling of the estate, respond to requests for space, as well as plan and oversee moves of individuals, whole teams and departments. We maintain the space database which holds information about each individual room across the residential and non-residential estate. The team also manage the property transactions of leased and licenced spaces, business ratings, advise on property management issues as well as lead on property acquisitions and disposals.

Maintenance and Engineering survey the University's estate and planning maintenance projects to ensure that our buildings and infrastructure remain fit for purpose. Our asset information informs a three year Long Term Maintenance (LTM) plan of major maintenance projects and our technical requirements inform projects through Design Guidance. LTM projects are delivered by the Project Management team to the requirements and standards we set. To complement LTM we have an annual cyclical planned preventive maintenance plan of inspections, servicing and remedial repairs on key assets to maximise life cycle and ensure legislative compliance. In addition to planned maintenance our Reactive Maintenance team respond to unplanned breakdowns reported to the Helpdesk.

Energy and Carbon Management are responsible for the purchasing of University’s utilities including gas, electricity and water as well as heat through a complex district heating contract. We seek to reduce utilities consumption so as to minimise cost and reduce our carbon footprint. This is done through the operation of the computerised Building Management System (BMS) and two plans; the Energy Demand Reduction Plan and a Heat Decarbonisation Plan. Through these plans we aim to balance reducing energy demand with the implementation of new technologies such as solar photovoltaic and heat pumps towards Net Zero Carbon. As with maintenance our technical requirements inform project Design Guidance and our energy and carbon projects are delivered by the Project Management team.

Health, Safety and Sustainability

We are committed to ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of our students and staff as demonstrated in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Policy Statement (PDF, 837KB).

The Health, Safety and Sustainability team comprise of two teams, the Health and Safety Team, and the Sustainability Team. The Health and Safety Team are qualified safety professionals with extensive health and safety experience and knowledge in fields including biological, chemical, fire and radiation safety. The team consists of the Health and Safety Business Partners, the University Radiation Safety Officer, the Fire/Project/Training Business Partner.

The Sustainability team work across campus to help the University be a more sustainable and socially aware institution. They comprise of a Social Impact Lead, Social Impact Coordinators, Academic Engagement Officer, and Environmental Officer.

Together we offer provision of expert advice and information on health and safety issues to University senior management and staff, monitoring of health and safety performance, provision of health and safety training for managers and staff, advice on health and statutory requirements and maintenance of record, and liaison with relevant enforcing authorities.

Through the cooperation between the Health and Safety team and the University community, we have been awarded with the prestigious RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Gold Award for four years running from 2020 through 2023. This is in recognition of our commitment to maintaining a safe campus as well as to improving the way we look after staff and student safety and wellbeing.

As part of our continual improvements to health and safety, we are currently working to achieve certification to the internationally recognised IS045001: Health and Safety Management standard.

All prospective students should be aware that we take their health and safety seriously. There is a range of documents that will be made available to them through our intranet site to support them and their studies and staying safe while in their accommodation.
