Leicester’s space expertise to be showcased on world stage
Experts from Space Park Leicester will showcase how its pioneering community is advancing space exploration and research when the global space sector gathers for a major event in Turkey next week.
A team from the University of Leicester’s £100m space research, innovation and teaching hub will join the UK Space Agency on its stand at the 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) which will address pressing issues surrounding space security, exploration and the ethical implications of our activities beyond Earth.
Organised by the International Astronautical Federation, the event is being held in Antalya, Turkey, for the first time and is expected to attract 6,000 delegates from around the world who want to learn about the latest pioneering space research and innovative technologies.
Space Park Leicester Head of Strategic Communications and Marketing, Alex Wheldon, said: “IAC is an incredible event which covers all space sectors and topics.
“It’s the place to find out the latest space information and developments in academia and industry and provides great networking opportunities to help the global space community develop unique potential partnerships.
“We’re excited about sharing how the Space Park Leicester community is pushing the boundaries of space exploration and research, satellite technology and Earth observation to benefit society.”
The Space Park Leicester team will raise awareness about its services and co-location, laboratory and office spaces for companies and researchers and will share information about its new NASA 4-D Executive Space Programme and the Space Science and Engineering Masters course.
It will join three other UK organisations on the UK Space Agency’s stand – Bright Ascension, Foundational and Magdrive.
The theme of this year’s event is ‘The World Needs More Space’ and is designed to highlight the urgent need to explore and preserve outer space space in a secure, sustainable and inclusive way. As more countries become interested in space exploration, the congress organisers are calling for global cooperation to ensure the benefits of space are shared all nations and future generations.
The event, which will be hosted by the Turkish Space Agency and co-hosted by the SAHA Istanbul Aerospace Cluster, will take place from Monday, October 5, to Friday, October 9.
