Leicester and DMU in final Varsity showdown

The sporting rivalry between the students of the University of Leicester and De Montfort University comes to a head on Monday 30 April as their teams take over the Leicester Tigers stadium for the eagerly awaited rugby matches.

Welford Road will host the men’s and women’s teams from University of Leicester and De Montfort University at the climax of this year’s Varsity season. This year, University of Leicester and Leicester Students’ Union invite everyone to ‘be part of it’ by joining the crowds. Gates open from 6.00pm with the women’s match kicking off at 6.15pm, with the men’s fixture at 8.00pm. Tickets for the Men’s and Women’s Rugby on Monday 30 April and Varsity wristband packages can be bought from SHOP! on campus and the Students' Union reception, and through the Tigers ticket office.

More than 60 teams of students have been competing in nearly 30 sports to be crowned Varsity Champion. The University of Leicester has once again claimed the coveted title, which it has held the title every year since records began in 2000, with the current score standing at 35 points to DMU’s 21. But honour is still at stake in what are the most eagerly anticipated matches of all the games.

Varsity is an annual competition which pits sports teams from the University of Leicester, commonly known as Team Leicester, against teams from local neighbours De Montfort University. Despite the rivalry which runs between students of both institutions the matches are played in good spirit and is the highlight of the year for many competitors.
