Free language taster sessions from Languages at Leicester

A long-running language learning programme providing over a dozen languages is offering members of the public the opportunity to try a new language for free.

Languages at Leicester is running one-hour 'taster sessions' from 16 – 19 January, giving members of the public the chance to try learning a few basic phrases of a language of interest. And, taking the concept of a 'taster session' literally, they might also have the opportunity to sample some food, music or customs from the cultures associated with those particular languages.

Like their courses, these sessions are open to everyone, not just staff and students at the University. The taster sessions on offer take place on the University campus and at the Leicester Central Library on the following dates:

  • Monday 16 January 2017, 12.30-1.30pm: Italian, Japanese & Spanish on the University Main Campus (University Rd, Leicester LE1 7RH)
  • Tuesday 17 January 2017, 5.30-6.30pm: Arabic & Portuguese at Leicester Central Library (Bishop St, Leicester LE1 6AA)
  • Wednesday 18 January 2017, 5.30-6.30pm: British Sign Language & Mandarin Chinese at Leicester Central Library (Bishop St, Leicester LE1 6AA)
  • Thursday 19 January 2017, 4-5pm: French, German & Latin on the University Main Campus (University Rd, Leicester LE1 7RH)

Also, on Thursday 19 January from 4 - 5pm is a University staff-only session on 'Mandarin Chinese Language, cultural awareness and social etiquette', a pilot session specially designed for University of Leicester staff which aims to provide support for those who have interaction with Chinese students, as well as being open to any staff who simply wish to learn more about Chinese language and culture.
