Leading human rights activist to speak on civil liberty and democratic freedom

Leading human rights activist Shami Chakrabarti CBE will be discussing civil liberty, the importance of democratic freedom and how to prevent future acts of terrorism at a free public lecture in the Peter Williams Lecture Theatre on Wednesday 11 February 2015 at 5:15pm.

Part of the Department of Criminology's Scarman Lecture series, the talk will explore issues of democratic freedom in post-9/11 society.

Shami Chakrabarti is the director of Liberty, the British civil liberties and human rights advocacy organisation and, since July 2008, the Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University. In September 2014, she took up the role as Chancellor of the University of Essex.

The lecture will be followed by a book signing of Shami’s new book, ‘On Liberty’ which explores why our fundamental rights and freedoms are indispensable and the unprecedented pressures those rights are under today.

The University of Leicester’s Bookshop will have a stall at the event selling copies of the book. To reserve a copy of the book ‘On Liberty’, from University bookshop, visit the shop or phone or email: bookshop@leicester.ac.uk.

A wine reception will be held after providing an opportunity for attendees to meet and talk to Shami.
