About

The Department of Engineering, now one of the largest at the University of Leicester with over 600 undergraduates, accepted its first intake of just 30 students in October 1961, a year before the completion of its own new building.

Today, we are still based in the world-famous Grade II* listed Engineering Building that was designed by the admired architects, James Stirling and James Gowan. The distinctive red brick tower houses offices and two lecture theatres, while underneath the adjacent glass roof lie laboratories and workshops for undergraduate teaching and postgraduate research.

After more than 50 years of service, the iconic glass roof was replaced during a project lasting between May 2015 and April 2017. Our world-famous building stimulates all of our activities. We offer an outstanding student experience and engage in world-leading research.

We are a very friendly Department and encourage you to visit and discover how special Engineering is at the University of Leicester.
