Using skills and knowledge from MedRACE within my first year as a junior doctor

Photo of a group of doctorsIt is coming to the end of my First year as a junior doctor and what a journey it has been! I have been so lucky to meet some amazing people.

Something that has really stood out for me during this time is how relevant MedRACE has been! MedRACE helped myself and so many others whilst at medical school. Having started work within the NHS, I have seen how much of an impact the skills and knowledge that I gained from being part of MedRACE has had. More times than I can recall I have leant on the values that MedRACE teach to help myself and others.

I was fortunate enough to be able to run an ‘active bystander training’ for the FY1s at my hospital in London and the reception was great. Many had had relatable experiences and were keen to obtain tools to learn how cope with discrimination in the workplace.

Amazingly so many F1s came and spoke to me afterwards about situations that they had encountered within the workplace that they felt had related to the session. This was very similar to the response that we had had from our medical students when I delivered the same training about a year ago. The similarities were profound.

Upon reflection, a few days after the teaching session I felt proud and honoured to be able to share with others what MedRACE had shared with me a couple of years ago.

My goal is to spread the word throughout each placement and enable as many doctors to feel even slightly more comfortable/empowered about speaking up in the workplace.

I am excited for more collaborations with MedRACE and what the future of the group will bring!
