David H Evans
We have learned, with sadness, of the death of Professor David H Evans, who held a Chair in Medical Physics at Leicester from 1990 to his retirement in 2011.
David Howel Evans was born in Cheshire in 1950 and studied for a BSc in Physics at the University of Surrey. He started work at Leicester Royal Infirmary in 1974 and remained there until his retirement, except for a short spell at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro from 1980 to 1982.
He received a PhD in medical physics from the University of Leicester in 1979, and later received a DSc from Surrey for his work on Doppler ultrasound. In 1990 he was appointed Professor of Medical Physics at Leicester, in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences.
Professor Evans was a Chartered Physicist, a Chartered Scientist, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, and an Honorary member of the British Medical Ultrasound Society, having served as President from 1996 to 1998. He also served at various times as President of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, Editor of the journal Physiological Measurement from 1993 to 1997, and Instrumentation and Techniques Editor of the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound from 1993 to 1996.
David H Evans passed away in the LRI on 24 May 2025, aged 75. The University extends our deepest condolences to his wife Christina, children Jennifer and William, and grandchildren Jack, Freya, Lucas, Freddy and Isabella.
