About the University of Leicester

Alexander Gorban

The University of Leicester is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Alexander Gorban, Professor of Applied Mathematics, who died on 21 September 2025 at the age of 73.

Professor Gorban joined Leicester in 2004 and for more than two decades was a central figure in our mathematical sciences community. An internationally renowned scholar, he made pioneering contributions across statistical physics, dynamical systems, chemical kinetics, machine learning and mathematical biology. He directed the Centre for Mathematical Modelling (later the Centre for AI, Data Analytics and Modelling) and was a generous teacher and mentor to generations of students and colleagues.

Born in Siberia in 1952, Professor Gorban’s career spanned Russia, Europe and the United States before he settled in Leicester. He published over 200 papers and numerous books, and was recognised globally with fellowships and prizes for his ground-breaking research in non-equilibrium thermodynamics and model reduction.

We will remember him not only for his remarkable intellect and scientific achievements, but also for his warmth, curiosity and commitment to fostering collaboration across disciplines. His loss will be felt deeply in Leicester and far beyond.

The University extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and collaborators around the world.
