Overview

What is Collaboratory?

https://collaboratoryresearchhub.ac.uk/about-us/

Collaboratory is an innovative, community-driven doctoral training initiative designed to make research more inclusive, practical, and impactful. Funded by Research England Development Fund, it is a £7.4 million investment over eight years, and is a collaboration between Nottingham Trent University, the University of Nottingham, University of Leicester, Loughborough University and De Montfort University.

Purpose

To embed local voices at the heart of doctoral research. The Collaboratory connects PhD researchers with communities, public bodies, and civic partners to co-create projects that address real-world challenges across Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and the wider region.

Key Features

Fully funded PhD studentships (three-year, full-time).

Civically engaged research: projects developed with community partners, ensuring research benefits local people and organisations.

Inclusive access: open to applicants from all backgrounds, including those without a traditional academic pathway.

Collaborative training environment: researchers join a supportive network of academics, practitioners, and community groups.

Regional impact: projects focus on local and regional priorities, contributing to sustainable social, cultural, and economic change.

Who It’s For

Ideal for applicants who are:

Passionate about community-focused research.

Interested in solving practical challenges through academic study.
