Internships, work experience and volunteering

We are here to help you to find the right internship whilst you study, or even after you've graduated.

One thing employers are always looking for is experience. Our Career Development Service has access to hundreds of paid internships which are a great opportunity to build your experience and confidence – and earn some extra cash. You can work alongside people who are already successful in the industry which you are planning to enter and find out what your dream job is really like, while developing your professional network and enhancing your CV. You can also make use of our in-house recruitment consultancy, Unitemps, who can help you to find part-time work which will help you to build up your CV and gain valuable experience.

Our Undergraduate Internship Programme offers opportunities from a huge range of employers, as well as preparation workshops, one-to-one support and online advice.

Another great way of gaining experience is voluntary work. This could be anything from helping children in local primary schools to clearing ponds for wildlife. Volunteering demonstrates your capacity for hard work and that you have the motivation to get stuck in. We can help you to find the right volunteering opportunities and, through our Leicester Award, provide clear evidence to employers of your commitment to developing yourself above and beyond your degree studies.

Volunteering can be a really useful way to experiment with a career before fully committing yourself. Or you can use it as an opportunity to get specific experience related to your chosen career. For many careers such as legal or social work, teaching, journalism and conservation jobs, vocational volunteering experience is essential.
