Running track to be fenced off for safety

The University of Leicester will be securing part of its estate in Oadby to protect the public from the potential for injury.

Fencing will soon be erected around the disused running track, located on land adjacent to the Roger Bettles Sports Centre buildings, in Manor Road.

This is to prevent members of the public accessing the track, which has been out of use for several years. Signs have been in place since 2016 warning the public not to use the track for running or walking on, as the surface is not safe to use. However, these signs have not prevented people using the area. As a responsible landowner, the University has a duty of care, under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1984, to ensure the public do not put themselves at risk.

As a result, the decision has been taken to install fencing to secure the track site. The pitch within the track will be available exclusively for student fixtures, with access managed accordingly.
