University of Leicester hosts screening of Strawbs documentary in honour of alumnus David Cousins

The Attenborough Arts Centre is honoured to host a special screening of The Magic of It All, a documentary celebrating the life, music, and legacy of David (Dave) Cousins, University of Leicester alumnus and founder and singer/songwriter of the legendary folk-rock band Strawbs.

This one-night-only event will take place on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, and will be introduced by members of the documentary crew who have travelled from South Africa.

The screening is a heartfelt tribute to Cousins, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 85. His contributions to music and broadcasting were profound, with tributes from Clash Music, Radio Today, The Times, The Telegraph and The Guardian highlighting his pioneering spirit and creative brilliance.

David Cousins’s connection to Leicester runs deep. He studied pure mathematics and mathematical statistics at the University of Leicester, where his passion for music flourished. While a student, he founded the University Folk Club and organised its first folk festival. He also helped open a disused cellar under the Percy Gee Building as the Friday Night Trad Jazz Club, a space that became a hub for musical exploration and is now part of the O2 Academy.

He graduated from Leicester with a General Science BSc in 1962, founding Strawbs two years later in 1964. In recognition of his remarkable career, the University of Leicester awarded Cousins an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2023. His advice to students was characteristically visionary: “Don’t think in straight lines ahead – think laterally. You never know what might be just around the corner.”

Watch David’s speech for graduating students in full, with a performance of the Strawbs song ‘The Golden Salamander’:

From his early days inspired by Lonnie Donegan and Woody Guthrie to leading Strawbs through decades of musical evolution—from bluegrass to folk rock to progressive rock—Cousins remained a creative force and a beloved figure in British music.

As Natie Botes, a co-executive producer of the documentary, says: “The Magic Of It All showcases a creative burst from Classic Rock pioneer David Cousins and Strawbs, the band he was leading. With a surprising twist of fate it unveils fragile humanity and the weave of old bonds with new friendships. Nobody saw this one coming!”

Andrew Fletcher, Director of the University of Leicester’s Attenborough Arts Centre, said: “We are deeply honoured to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of David Cousins here at his alma mater. His creativity, innovation, and passion for music continue to inspire generations. This screening is not only a tribute to his remarkable journey, but also a moment to look forward. Through our new David Cousins Fund, we will ensure that his legacy continues to support and uplift the next generation of musical talent. We welcome everyone to attend this special event.”

In memory of David Cousins, the University has established a legacy fund to support music activities. Donations can be gratefully received via JustGiving at The David Cousins Fund for Emerging Arts Scholars - JustGiving.
