International experts convene for groundbreaking workshop on empathic leadership education
A one-day workshop to develop the world's first comprehensive curriculum on empathic leadership for healthcare professionals is set to take place.
The 7 July workshop will bring together international experts in leadership, psychology, and organisational behaviour.
Led by empathy experts from the University of Leicester’s Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare, it aims to address key factors including authentic communication techniques, psychological safety in teams, cross-cultural emotional intelligence, and evidence-based practices for fostering organisational empathy.
The workshop will take place at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford with attendance by invitation only.
"In today's complex global healthcare landscape, empathic leadership represents a critical evolution in management philosophy," said Professor Jeremy Howick, director of the Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare.
"Not only does empathic leadership help create mutual trust between those leading and those delivering healthcare, but it overwhelmingly helps to improve the experiences of patients, enhancing their overall quality of care and therefore improving their health outcomes.
“This workshop marks the beginning of a formal educational approach to developing leaders who combine emotional intelligence with strategic vision through a curriculum that can be emulated across healthcare systems for the benefit of all.”
Participating experts represent leaders from the NHS, Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, University of California Berkeley, Apollo Education, and beyond.
The resulting curriculum will be piloted at select educational institutions beginning autumn 2025, with plans for broader implementation following assessment.
