Leicester schools and community invited to celebrate Earth Day at Space Park Leicester
School children and members of the Leicester community are invited to join experts from the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) at Space Park Leicester and take part in a range of biodiversity activities in celebration of Earth Day next month.
The event, on Monday, April 22, designed to celebrate our planet and raise awareness about environmental conservation, will feature engaging activities for both local schools and the broader Leicester community.
The day will start with a schools' session from 9.30am to midday, welcoming students from Wolsey House Primary School to participate in a range of educational activities. Highlights include showcasing camera trap footage and bird walks which will be led by Space Park Leicester’s very own Mark Sims who is Professor of Astrobiology and Space Instrumentation at the University of Leicester.
Following the schools' session, the community event will commence at 3pm and run until 6.30pm. It will begin with the unveiling of a new sculpture by renowned artist Michelle Reader. Michelle has a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Scenography and makes unique figurative recycled sculptures.
Her latest sustainable piece for Space Park Leicester primarily uses waste materials from Space Park laboratories and workshops.
Attendees can also look forward to participating in biodiversity satellite games, talks, litter picking groups, bulb planting and a final bird walk – all of which are aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and scientific education.
