New physiotherapy clinic launched at the University of Leicester

A student leads a physiotherapy session in the new clinic

A new student led physiotherapy clinic is set to open next month at the University of Leicester.

The clinic will be open to the public, staff and students at reduced rates, giving quick and affordable access to physiotherapy services. Consultations cost £10 per session with each session lasting approximately an hour.

The Jo Williams Clinic is a purpose-built facility for patients with a variety of conditions including sports injuries, chronic pain, post-surgery or neurological rehabilitation needs. Facilities at the clinic include treatment bays, a high spec gym area, treadmill with hoist if required, Watt bikes, a Motomed and more. It is located within the heart of the University in the Maurice Shock Building.

Assessment and treatment will be led by physiotherapy students from the University of Leicester and other local universities in the innovative and state of the art setting, giving them the opportunity to complete their placements under supervision from highly experienced clinical staff.

The clinic has been named after Johanna Williams, a highly respected member of the team who taught Physiotherapy at the University and sadly passed away a few months after retirement in February 2022.

Jo Williams

Jo specialised in Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) and research for much of her career, at Glenfield Hospital and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, developing outcome measures for PR used worldwide today and latterly as a Cardiorespiratory Lecturer at the University where she was well respected for her commitment and professionalism.

Associate Professor Charlotte Carter-Lang, Head of the Jo Williams Clinic and Practice Education Lead for the School of Healthcare, set up the clinic in memory of her late friend.

She said: “The clinic will be a lasting legacy to our well respected and much missed colleague, Jo. This fantastic new facility will ensure our healthcare students have a high-quality space to complete their placements as well as offering an invaluable service to the public.”

Newly appointed Clinic Lead, Callum Young is part of the team overseeing the new clinic.

He said: “I’m delighted to be part of the team helping to run the clinic and looking forward to welcoming our first patients. I know our students are keen to show their development and professionalism. We hope the new clinic will be a fantastic resource for the local community here in the Maurice Shock building in University Road.”

The clinic opens on 23 September. Appointments are weekdays from 8.30am to 3.30pm. To pre-book, visit the website or call 0116 2522040.
