Modern Languages

Modern Languages at Leicester is one of the leading centres for the study of languages, translation, and cultures in the UK. We provide courses in the languages and cultures of the Francophone, Italian and Hispanic worlds and in Translation Studies, the latter via our Centre for Translation and Interpreting. We also offer courses in languages for non-specialists through our extracurricular Languages at Leicester programme.

We have a vibrant study community with an outstanding record for student experience and student support. We have consistently achieved excellent results in the National Student Survey, for which our overall student satisfaction stands at 92% (NSS 2020, overall satisfaction ranking in the subject area of European Languages and Area Studies). In its annual survey of UK universities, the Guardian's University Guide 2020 ranked Modern Languages at Leicester 10th in the country, scoring us highest nationally for ‘Satisfied with course’ (98.1), second nationally for ‘Satisfied with feedback’ (88.5), and  third nationally for ‘Satisfied with teaching’ (96.1).

Modern Languages at Leicester is part of the School of Arts.

The University’s research is ranked 30 in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework 2021, according to analysis by Times Higher Education.

One of the many great things about studying Languages at Leicester is the inclusion of contemporary and historical cultural modules alongside the linguistic aspect of the course.
