British Sign Language (BSL)

These courses are designed to start from an absolute beginners and will teach learners to communicate with deaf people on a range of general topics. You will be taught by a professional Deaf Tutor in a friendly and supportive environment.

Courses lead to a qualification* that is divided into three units for the Level 1 and four units for the Level 2.  Each unit for Level 1 can be achieved separately.  For Level 2, learners are required to enrol onto the 25 week course.

Level 1: Part 1

This is for you if you have no prior knowledge of British Sign language (or so little that you effectively want to start again from scratch). You will learn basic skills to enable you to make yourself understood and to find out information in everyday situations.

You will be taught by a trained and experienced deaf BSL tutor. Having a deaf tutor (the equivalent to a native speaker) has its benefits. Students acquire real experience communicating with deaf people and have a better understanding of how interaction with signs takes place.

  • Session information: Mondays or Tuesdays from 6-8pm or Wednesdays from 3-5pm.
  • Timeline: Starting week 12 October 2020 - running until week commencing 14 December 2020
  • Course length: 10 weeks October - December 2020. 
  • Fees: Full Course £110 with an additional fee of £33 for the exam- the exam fee can be paid at the time or enrolment or once the course has started.

Level 1: Part 2 - Online

This is for you if you have prior knowledge of British Sign Language or you have completed the iBSL Level 1 Award - Part 1 (1A2 unit). You will continue developing basic conversational skills to enable you to make yourself understood and to find out information in everyday situations. 

You will be taught by a trained and experience deaf BSL tutor enabling students to acquire real experience communicating with deaf people and have a better understanding of how interaction with signs takes place. 

Key information

  • Session information: Thursdays from 6-8pm
  • Timeline: Starting 15 October 2020 - running until 17 December 2020
  • Term 1: 10 weeks 15 October - 17 December 2020. 
  • Fees: Full Course £125. There is an additional fee of £33 for the 1A3 exam, the exam fee can be paid at the time or enrolment or once the course has started.

Level 1: Part 3 - Online

This is for you if you have prior knowledge of British Sign language or you have completed the iBSL Level 1 Award - Parts 1A2 & 1A3. You will continue developing basic conversational skills and basic receptive skills to enable you to make yourself understood and to find out information in everyday situations. 

You will be taught by a trained and experience deaf BSL tutor enabling students to acquire real experience communicating with deaf people and have a better understanding of how interaction with signs takes place.

  • Session information: Tuesdays 6-8pm
  • Timeline: Starting 13 October 2020 - running until 15 December 2020
  • Term 1: 10 weeks 12 October - 15 December 2020
  • Fees:  Full Course £125 plus an additional fee of £33 for the 1A1 exam, the exam fee can be paid at the time or enrolment or once the course has started.

Level 2

This is for you if you have completed and passed either the full iBSL Level 1 Award (Units 1A1, 1A2 and 1A3) or the full Signature BSL Level 1 Award (Units 101, 102 and 103).
