Collection history
The Maurice Ennals Collection comprises 16 recordings of BBC Radio Leicester programmes, 7 scrap books, various publications and 12 correspondence files. The items were collected personally by Maurice Ennals, the first Station Manager of Radio Leicester, the radio station that led the way in local radio provision in the United Kingdom. The Wessex Film and Sound Archive deposited the collection with the EMOHA in August 2003. Additional material relating to Radio Solent where Maurice Ennals later became Station Manager can be found at The Wessex Film and Sound Archive and material relating to Maurice Ennals work at Radio Durham can be found at the Durham Record Office.
What the collection contains
The recordings in the collection document the opening of the station with the first programmes broadcast on 8th November 1967 and cover various anniversary programmes over the years. Seven scrapbooks compiled by Maurice Ennals contain memorabilia from the first years of the station. Various publications including the Radio Times and the BBC staff paper Ariel, with articles on Radio Leicester, are also contained in the collection along with Maurice Ennal's personal work files. This collection is a valuable addition to the BBC Radio Leicester Archive Collection held in the EMOHA collections.
