Presessional entry levels

To get a Student Visa for study in the UK, you must have an English language test result which is recognised by United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI), known as a 'Secure English Language Test' (SELT). For Online presessionals, we are able to accept a wider range of test results. For further information, please email pspadmissions@le.ac.uk.

All of the tests below can be used for entry to Online presessionals.

If you are already in the UK with a dependent visa (or other acceptable visa valid for the whole duration of the programme), it is also possible to take the Leicester Presessional English Test. For further information, please email english.test@le.ac.uk.

Entry levels for Presessional Programme

Module A

Acceptable tests and scores

  • IELTS - 4.0 overall
  • PTE - 31

Module B

Acceptable tests and scores

  • IELTS - 4.5 overall
  • PTE - 36

Module C

Acceptable tests and scores

  • IELTS - 5.0 overall
  • PTE - 42

Additional tests and scores accepted for online presessional only:

  • Cambridge CAE and CPE - 150
  • TOEFL - 60
  • CET6 (with interview) - 550
  • Gaokao (with interview) - 76%

We also offer the Leicester Presessional English Test if you are unable to take another test. Please email english.test@le.ac.uk for details.

Module D

Acceptable tests and scores

  • IELTS - 5.5 overall
  • PTE - 46
  • Language Cert B2 for SELT - Minimum 33 in each skill

Additional tests and scores accepted for online presessional only:

  • Cambridge CAE and CPE - 162
  • TOEFL - 70
  • iGCSE English Language - C
  • HKDSE (with interview) - 3
  • CET6 (with interview) - 550
  • Gaokao (with interview) - 76%

Module E

Acceptable tests and scores

  • IELTS - 6.0 overall
  • PTE - 54

Additional tests and scores accepted for online presessional only:

  • Cambridge CAE and CPE - 169
  • TOEFL - 80
  • iGCSE English Language - B
  • HKDSE (with interview) - 4
  • CET6 (with interview) - 550
  • Gaokao (with interview) - 76%
