Summer School 2023

Representations of Chemistry research: batteries (materials and interfaces), substrate in an enzyme (chemical biology), molecular structure (sustainable synthesis and catalysis), stylised nanoparticle (spectroscopy and atmospheric chemistry), and Dr Williams delivering a class (Learning Enhancement and Pedagogy)

Do you want to know what it's like to be a Chemistry Student at Leicester? Do you want to find out what career opportunities are out there for Chemistry graduates?

The Chemistry Summer School is an intensive 3-day school funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The Summer School is specifically designed for Chemistry A-level students who are considering studying Chemistry at University.

Join us for an intensive 3-day programme packed with lectures, tutorials, and practical activities, including research secondments with some of our world-leading research teams.

Time: 9.30am - 3.30pm
Location: School of Chemistry (George Porter Building, University of Leicester)

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for a Summer School place, students must:

  • Be a Year 12 or equivalent (lower sixth) student at the point of application.
  • Currently attend a non-selective state school/college/sixth-form (i.e. you do not pay for your education).
  • Be living within one hour travel from the University (all travel costs will be covered).

We host our summer schools to give year 12 students the opportunity to fully engage in life as a university student. We have limited spaces in our summer schools so will be prioritising spaces for students who meet one or more of the selection criteria applied to other Summer Schools run by the University of Leicester.

7 August 2023

  • 9.00am - 10.00am – Breakfast and registration
  • 10.00am - 11.00am – Welcome lecture
  • 11.00am - 11.30am – Break (tea/coffee and biscuits)
  • 11.30am - 12.00pm – Meet the tutors
  • 12.00pm - 1.00pm – Lunch break
  • 1.00pm - 3.30pm – Laboratory practical

8 August 2023

  • 9.00am - 9.30am – Breakfast
  • 9.30am - 11.30am – Laboratory practical
  • 11.30am - 12.00pm – Lecture
  • 12.00pm - 1.00pm – Lunch break
  • 1.00pm - 1.30pm – Meet the tutors
