School of Chemistry

Research degrees

Our staff and our research programmes place us at the cutting edge of scientific research. Our department has an international profile, and is supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and a wide range of equipment, facilities and technical expertise.

We offer supervision for PhDs or MPhils, both full- and part-time.

Postgraduate training

We provide a formal structure for postgraduate training and assessment. The scheme is aimed at ensuring you make a smooth transition from undergraduate to postgraduate work, and that you leave the Department with multitude of skills.

Most of our training is in the form of workshops which cover chemical, technical and transferable skills. Additional training is also provided by the College of Science and Engineering.

We also encourage you to participate in undergraduate teaching as demonstrators in practical classes.

What our students say

I chose Leicester because the research that I am undertaking was an opportunity to use the skills that I had learned in my undergraduate degree in a new way that I had never seen done before.

Luke, Atmospheric Chemistry and Earth Observation Science

Fate has brought me to Leicester. I was working on protein chemistry for my masters thesis, which I quite enjoyed. During the latter half of my masters year, Professor Raven was invited up to Edinburgh for a seminar talk I attended. After her presentation I decided I'd like to continue studies in the same sort of field.
