We have a world-leading reputation with outstanding strengths in both Archaeology and Ancient History.

We cover a wide chronological span, with our archaeologists exploring early societies from the dawn of agriculture through to the very recent past; and our ancient historians having expertise from geometric Greece to late antiquity. We also offer a broad geographical perspective, spanning the world from China to the Caribbean, and from Northumbria to North Africa.

You will have the chance to study a wide array of topics during your time here, but our staff have particular expertise in Prehistory, Historical Archaeology, and Archaeological Theory; as well as Roman Archaeology, the Hellenistic world, and social and cultural history.

We pride ourselves in working together as a combined School of Archaeology and Ancient History. It means that we can adopt exciting and innovative approaches to exploring the past.
