Section 4 - The Council

  1. The Council shall consist of up to 22 members, a majority of whom shall not be staff or students of the University, comprised of the following:
    • Class 1 - The President and Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors and the Treasurer.
    • Class 2 – Members not exceeding eight in number, who shall not be staff or students of the University, to be appointed by the Council.
    • Class 3 - Such members not exceeding four in number as may be appointed by the Court from among the members of the Court in accordance with Ordinances.
    • Class 4 - Four members of the Senate of the University, with appropriate academic and professional leadership responsibilities, appointed by the Senate as specified in Ordinances, who shall not be Pro-Vice-Chancellors.
    • Class 5 – An officer of the Students’ Union appointed by the executive of the Students’ Union.
    • Class 6 – The Chair of the Alumni Association, or a representative nominated by the Chair from among the elected members of the Standing Committee of the Alumni Association.
  2. Members of the Council included in Classes 1 and 5 shall hold office while they occupy the position named respectively.
  3. Members of the Council included in Classes 2, 3, 4 and 6 shall hold office for three years or for such shorter period as the appointing bodies may determine.
  4. All casual vacancies in Class 3 may be filled by the Council until the next Annual General Meeting of the Court. All other casual vacancies shall be filled by the body which appointed the representative whose place has become vacant.
  5. Except where otherwise provided representatives need not be members of the body by which they are elected or appointed.
  6. Except where otherwise provided all retiring members shall be eligible for re-appointment or re-election. Ordinances may make provision as to the maximum continuous period of membership.
  7. Subject to clause 4 of this Section no person shall be eligible for appointment or re- appointment as a member of the Council under Class 3 unless notice of his or her nomination shall have been given on the agenda paper of a duly convened meeting of the Court.
  8. Ordinances may prescribe procedures for identifying nominees for membership of the Council in Classes 2, 3 and 4.
  9. Meetings of the Council shall be quorate provided that at least eight members are present, a majority of whom shall not be staff or students of the University.
  10. Any member of the Council may resign at any time by written notice addressed to the Registrar and Secretary of the University.
