The University of Leicester recognises that the Earth faces a climate emergency

As the University prepares to celebrate its centenary, and our thoughts turn to the future (PDF, 398kb), we recognise our responsibility to prioritise how we will meet the challenges of our institution’s next century without detrimental impact on health and the environment.

Leicester’s ambition is to be a world leader in environmental sustainability, both academically and operationally. Work towards this is already under way. Mapping of the UN Sustainable Development Goals illustrates a strong pedigree of climate change research and teaching at Leicester – resulting in the university being well regarded in the sustainability sector. We also already deliver ambitious operational targets around the reduction of our negative environmental impact.

The University’s Climate Change Strategy (PDF, 463kb) demonstrates that, both operationally and academically, we will lead on the solution and avoid contributing to the problem. A detailed Climate Action Plan, showing how the university will deliver a climate positive future, will be published in summer 2020.
