Frequently asked questions

Will I be taught by expert lecturers who are still practising Physiotherapists?

Yes, the vast majority of our lecturing staff are lecturer/practitioners. This means that they spend some time in the University teaching and the rest of their week working as a clinical specialist physiotherapist in their own area of expertise. This can be in the NHS, in private practice or even in top level sport.

Do physiotherapy students share their specialist teaching rooms with other courses?

At Leicester, we have four dedicated physiotherapy practical rooms and a separate movement analysis lab, which are all packed with physiotherapy treatment equipment and research tools. These rooms are only for our physiotherapy students to use. That means that if the rooms are not being used for teaching, you can use the rooms and equipment for self-directed study and revision whenever you want to.

Do physiotherapy students at Leicester have access to simulation labs?

Yes, you will be taught in our state-of-the-art simulation labs, which are mock-up hospital wards and intensive care units. These have interactive manikins, which can be programmed to respond like a patient might do in a critical care situation. We also employ actors as patients - to provide a realistic but safe environment to practice assessment and treatment skills before entering the clinical environment. You can watch a video of the simulation lab.

Where do students go on their practice education placements?

We offer a fantastic range of practice education placements which we have developed over the past 15 years of teaching physiotherapy at Leicester. We have three large NHS hospitals in easy reach within the city of Leicester, and we work closely with Leicester Partnership Trust, which gives access to mental health placements, learning disability, palliative care and community services. We also have placements with private hospitals, charity-run therapy centres, a young disabled unit, top level sport (with Leicester Tigers), and specialist head injury and sports injury facilities. We are also establishing a working relationship with the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre, which cares for injured military services personnel.

Do physiotherapy students have access to a Dissection Room (DR) to learn anatomy?

Yes, you will have full access to the Leicester Medical School dissection room. We provide taught anatomy sessions using upper and lower limb prosections, and have access to full cadavers to explore the heart, lungs and other critical body systems. You can book to visit the DR at any time to continue to develop your knowledge of human anatomy. Physiotherapy students do not do any actual dissection but do have access to all specimens.
